Huge problem for DS, hopeful it wont carry over to the next handheld

It’s a known fact that widespread and resilient piracy has plagued the DS since 2007, thanks to piracy cards such as the R4. This has had a negative impact on the system, now clearly evident through developers’ unwillingness to invest in the system and the consequent drop in console sales.

The Nintendo Europe Anti-piracy Counsel spoke on the cards, identifying them as a major problem due to their widespread use of downloading and playing games. A highlighted concern was that “we [the gaming industry] are nowhere near the size of music and movies…” and that piracy was causing substantial damage to the medium.

When asked about piracy in regards to the 3DS, the ultimate fate of the illegal practice could not be determined. It is hoped that the fallout from the rampant DS piracy will give Nintendo “a good, solid legal foundation”.

Here’s hoping they’re correct so we don’t see developers shying away from producing software for the upcoming handheld.
