Nintendo DSi in Stores Now – Launch Event Coverage
The Nintendo DSi is now available in stores all across Australia, and only Australia, as we’re the first English speaking country to receive them. Nintendo held a launch event in the Nintendo Experience store inside EBGames on Swanston Street, Melbourne, last night. Luckily, our man Theo was able to snap some photos of the festivities. Head inside for the full wrap of the event and photos! If you picked up a DSi at the event, or even one today, then let us know what you think on the forums! Coverage Inside
The Recap
Earlier tonight in Melbourne’s Nintendo Experience Store (within EBGames), Nintendo themselves had a hand in breaking the street date for the new Nintendo DSi console. By the time I arrived the store was full of loyal Nintendo fans waiting patiently for their chance to snag the latest in handheld entertainment.
The DS Lite consoles in the store had all been replaced with DSi consoles, and Nintendo employees were busy handing out free ice-creams, soft drinks and show bags (complete with an issue of Nintendo Magazine and DS trucker hats)!
There was a Wii Mario Power Tennis tournament going on in one room, and in another was the DSi photo competition. Each contender would take a photo of themselves using the DSi and then spruce it up. The winner of each tournament won a free DSi courtesy of Nintendo Australia, with runners up winning Nintendo points to use on downloadable games of their choice.
By the time the clock hit 11pm, the line which had formed to trade in tickets for DSi consoles was all the way down the room and up the back stairs. The smiles as each person received their very own DSi were unmissable.
The smiles grew bigger as they were handed a free game from a choice of four (Brain Training, More Brain Training, Sight Training, Math Training) as well as a free 2GB SD card for all their DSi storage needs. By 11:30pm most people were on their way home, obviously eager to enjoy the benefits of their new Nintendo toy.
I had the chance to speak with Nintendo Australia’s Trade Marketing Manager, Matt Lawrence, who was more than happy with the turn out. He is eagerly awaiting further Nintendo events which will be happening throughout 2009.
