Nintendo CEO goes on the offensive, The Regginator strikes again
In a recent interview with Mercury News A+E interactive, Nintendo of America’s bigshot Reggie Fils Aime had more than a few things to say about competition in the next generation from Microsoft and Sony. Fils Aime said that Playstation 3 inventory is “”stacking up worldwide,”” and reasons that this is because the system is far too expensive and doesn’t yet have the right games. He also says Sony is taking a risky gamble with the success of the blu-ray media format, as well as how much consumers are willing to shell out for a game console. Fils Aime also suggested that the Wii user base could surpass that of Microsoft’s XBOX 360 in the near future if current sales maintain their velocity.
More Inside However, the wonder handheld could not be forgotten, and Fils Aime was quick to note that the DS has now sold 35.6 million units. “”We’re making millions a month, but the demand is above that,”” he said. When asked about the prospect of the Wii being a novelty, he said to remember the early criticism the DS faced, and points out that the Wii will be the same. Fils Aime also discussed the sport and FPS genre on the Wii, saying Nintendo will score some points in the sports arena with upcoming games from EA such as SSX Blur and the Tiger Woods Franchise. He believes Metroid Prime 3: Corruption, to be released later this year, will end all talk about first person shooter looking shoddy on the Wii, as well as put an end to gripes about the aiming system.
As far as our online Wii fix goes, Pokemon Battle revolution is still set to be the first online title in the US, and online development kits have been seeded and titles are coming. You may remember our report further back on Majesco talking about Nintendo’s secrecy over online. Hopefully this means Nintendo have listened to consumers and developers and are finally ready to unleash the Wii into the online world.
“”We’re about moving to the next rocket stage in our growth,”” he said at the close to the interview. We believe him too.
