Nintendo Australia’s revenue down as Wii winds down
Not so good news for Nintendo Australia today with its financial results from the last year being revealed. According to a report by Delimiter, Nintendo’s financial results from the past financial year were down when compared to the last years results.
For the last financial year (to March 31st 2011) Nintendo made $339.7 million in revenue, this year it’s just $200.1 million. That’s a drop of 41%. To keep this all in perspective Nintendo only made $71 million in revenue in 2006 before the Wii and Nintendo DS really took off.
Profits were down too with a loss of $11.4 million reported compared to a profit of $3.6 million last year. Marketing was slashed by almost 50% however this time around, some saving there.
While this all seems kind of dire we must remember that Nintendo’s only been half firing for a couple of years now. The Wii has slowed right down and the Nintendo 3DS is only just taking off with the Nintendo DS much less profitable as years gone by.
Nintendo Australia should fair better the next financial year once the Wii U gets released later this year.
I have to admit that Nintendo has played this generation of hardware very well indeed. These figured would be worrying if there was no Wii U around the corner and that 3DS wasnt finally hitting its stride.
It just goes to show that the console business is quite the risky proposition! Let’s hope the Wii U gets off to a great start!
