Have the DS and Wii reached their peak? Not quite, analysts say

For the first time in 6 years, Nintendo is forecasting a drop in profits for this fiscal year (ending March 2010). They forecast profits at 230 billion yen (AU$2.7 billion), down from last years record takings of 279.1 billion yen (AU$3.3 billion).

It is likely that the fall has been influenced by a strong value of the yen and recent price cuts of the Wii and DS consoles around the world, despite a boost in sales. However, inside sources claim that the enormous cost of the recent installation of a diving board in Nintendos money vault is to blame.

As DS sales figures begin to show symptoms of maturing hardware, Nintendo is already looking towards new technology for its next generation of handheld consoles. The company hopes to find some competitive angle and prevent further slippage with the 3DS (tentative name)- a new handheld with 3D capabilities which will be unveiled at the E3 conference in June, and expected to begin shipping in the current financial year.
