Nintendo announces LABO, build your own Toy-Con with Cardboard – out April 20
Nintendo has just announced its promised “new interactive experience” and it’s called Nintendo LABO.
Nintendo LABO is a “build and play experience” that uses the Nintendo Switch, and Joy-Con to build and create many different things. The first “Toy-Con” sets include a piano, fishing rod, and a steering wheel type toy. All of these use Nintendo Switch software to make them interactive.
“We are excited to introduce Nintendo Labo, our new invitation for everyone to make, play and discover with Nintendo Switch,” said Kamon Yoshimura, Managing Director of Nintendo Australia. “We are looking forward to seeing how families and all creative minds craft new ways to play together.”
There’s no scissors or glue needed, everything you need to make the sets are included in the box and come flat-pack.
The second set appears to be Project Giant Robot come to life. You build an entire mechanism for a robot and strap it on your back – all of in it cardboard. There’s also a customisation set for making your Toy-Con your own.
Nintendo has set up a new website with even more information, check it out here. The first two sets will be released worldwide on April 20th. Pricing for the sets and the customisation set are below;
- Variety Kit – $99.95
- Robot Kit – $119.95
- Customisation Set – $14.95
What do you think of LABO? Let us know in the comments.
Well that was unexpected.
Good to see Project Giant Robot live on though…
I think this will do well in Japan. Nintendo have been doing print your own paper sets for a few years. Not aimed at people like myself, but for kids, this could be fun. Good to see Nintendo being their crazy selves again!
Left-field but yeah I admire their efforts here, it may just capture a niche market and bring them over to the switch long-term.
awesome but too pricey
Whoa, that’s a lot of coin for cardboard!
This announcement is a letdown. Surely developing a virtual console service is a higher priority.
So, this is what the packaging design people have been working on… I’ve noticed the boxes for the Wii and WiiU were increasingly clever, and the Switch packaging was very tetris-esque when it came to fitting things together.
Looks awesomely fun to use, but longevity with cardboard…. dunno.
cant give us mother 3. CAN give us cardboard on mass. im impressed… i didnt see that coming like…at all
