Announced tonight during the Nintendo Direct broadcast, the Nintendo 3DS will be getting a completely new Yoshi’s Island game later this year.

Iwata confirmed that the new Yoshi’s Island game will feature many of the mechanics that were much loved from Yoshi’s Island; like the flutter jump, ground pound and egg throwing.

As well as traditional mechanics seen in previous games, the game will feature entirely new gameplay features which will take full advantage of the 3DS’s features. While we didn’t see a whole lot, a new feature is the ability to throw a massive egg to deform the landscape and take down enemies.

The game looks to have a very similar visual style to the original Yoshi’s Island with some influences from Yoshi’s Story, however it seems that Nintendo will be using the much more advanced capabilities of the 3DS to make that visual style even more visually compelling.

No word on release date quite yet, however you can be sure that we’ll let you know as soon as we know!
