Nintendo has revealed an upcoming hardware revision for the Wii which relinquishes GameCube compatibility in return for horizontal orientation. Now while it mightn’t be too far fetched to imagine that anyone who’s that fussed about backwards compatibility has already bought a Wii, it does certainly make the system less attractive. It’s especially worth considering that if you were previously using GameCube controllers to play, Super Smash Bros. Brawl, then this new Wii will force you to upgrade to Classic Controllers instead.
This new white only Wii will comprise part of a UK Christmas bundle with Wii Party and Wii Sports as well as a Remote Plus attachment and a Nunchuck. The bundle doesn’t yet have any pricing attached to it, or even an Australian release date.
We also don’t have details on whether there’s improvements to the system outside of being able to lie on it’s belly, although hopefully there will be some improvements to the disc drive’s reliability at least. It’s kind of interesting to see that Nintendo have no desperation to discontinue the Wii given the coming successor however, perhaps pointing towards a different market for Wii U buyers.
We’ll bring you more as it comes out.
