Luigi has a few tricks (and shortcomings) up his sleeve
Previously announced during the last Nintendo Direct – Iwata today shed some more light on New Super Luigi U, the downloadable expansion pack for New Super Mario Bros. U.
An entirely single player affair in which players control Luigi only, New Super Luigi U uses the same map as New Super Mario Bros. U but revamps every single one of the game’s 82 new courses in order to provide a new and somewhat fresh experience. The levels will also be developed to work with (and against) Luigi’s new abilities.
Returning from both The Lost Levels and Super Mario World, Luigi’s signature jump is now back – he can jump higher and “flutter” like Yoshi in New Super Luigi U. Additionally, due to “the nature of his character” (as Iwata puts it), Luigi has less traction, so he has a little bit more trouble stopping and starting when running across levels.
The courses themselves are also shorter, however Iwata demonstrated via on-screen footage that they will be significantly more difficult, showing some vicious trap setups. The timer is also lowered, encouraging players to get through the levels quickly and also (apparently) ensuring higher replayability.
We don’t have a date for New Super Luigi U‘s release, however we do know it is hitting Japan during June this year. Nintendo of Australia have confirmed a Winter (June-July-August) release for the Australian eShop. A price for this downloadable expansion, which Iwata likens to “a whole new game” has yet to be announced.
Remember, you’ll need your New Super Mario Bros. U disc in order to play New Super Luigi U once it releases, so hold on to it!
Are you grabbing New Super Luigi U, or are you totally burnt out on Mario style platformers?
