New Contra Instalment announced for DS

Konami Digital Entertainment Inc has recently announced the development of a new Contra title, tentatively named Contra IV, for the Nintendo DS handheld. The game is said to boast a new level and direction of 2D side scrolling action, including gunplay that spans both of the DS screens and an entire reworking of the gameplay mechanics allowing new deadly abilities and more frantic combat in the multiplayer fray where 2 players can team up together.

Fever pitch action will remain the same however, and fans will certainly remember the analogy that death can come from any direction as players jump, shoot and dodge in order to survive a constant bararge of incoming hazards. As a first for the series a grappling hook has been added to the arsenal, which can be used to attach to overhead elements of the environment as you see fit. In regards to the Contra timeline, the fourth installment takes place approximately two years after Contra III: The Alien Wars. Bill Rizer and Lance Beam must team up with the mercenaries Mad Dog and Scorpion in order to defeat a new alien threat, that of the Black Viper.

With this marking the 20th anniversary of the Contra series it’s hard not to get excited about this latest installment. If Contra IV can combine the best elements of the previous titles with some fresh new tricks this could turn out to be a sure-fire hit.
