Moon Chronicles hits the 3DS eShop in May

As we previously reported in January, Moon Chronicles is a first person shooter game in similar vein to Metroid and Metroid Prime developed by Renegade Kid. Renegade Kid have been rather quiet about the game but we’ve finally got some solid release details. But with every piece of good news comes some potential bad news.

Moon Chronicles is essentially a remake of the original Moon DS game, which we loved when we reviewed it way back when. There’s a little bit of a twist, though, as the game is split into several episodes and will be released throughout the course of the year. The game focuses on Major Kane, a character who is sent on a mission to investigate the origins of our moon. Think Prometheus, but without the contentious plot devices and with moons instead of people.

The game promises to have it’s visuals remastered to take advantage of the advanced power of the Nintendo 3DS, running at 60 frames per second even with the 3D turned on. Those who want the extra control can also use their Circle Pad Pro.

The idea behind Moon Chronicles is that it’s a platform that will constantly evolve. The first “season” of episodes will be the remake of the original game, but Renegade Kid co-founder, Jools Watsham, has told IGN that he hopes a second season of the game will be viable (that is, if the first one does well) and will feature brand new content and events that take place after the original game.

The pricing model is as follows: –

  • Episode 1: $8.99 (contains chapters 1 – 4 + 6 VR Missions: ~4 hours of gameplay).
  • Episode 2 (as DLC): $1.99 (contains chapters 5 – 8: ~2 hours of gameplay).
  • Episode 3 (as DLC): $1.99 (contains chapters 9 – 12: ~2 hours of gameplay).
  • Episode 4 (as DLC): $1.99 (contains chapters 13 – 16: ~2 hours of gameplay).

This morning, Nintendo of America tweeted that Moon Chronicles will be launching on the eShop very soon, on the 15th of May.

However, at the time of writing, the game does not appear to have been submitted to the Australian Classification Board and as such may not see a release on the same date.

As soon as we know whether or not the game will be releasing locally, we’ll be sure to offer an update. But for now, we can’t be certain while the game remains unclassified here.

Jools did upload a new trailer, however, and you can find that below in the meantime.
