There’s a Monster Hunter Championship 2017 event happening right in Japan and before the action kicks off they’re spilling the beans on more information about Switch version of the announced yesterday.

Capcom has announced that the game will support cross-play between 3DS and Switch console, not only that if you want to migrate to the Switch you can send your save data over. You’ll only be able to play with 3DS users over the internet, but four Switch players can play together locally. The game will also support 1080p graphics in docked mode.

Also announced was a special edition Nintendo Switch, the picture only shows flourish of design on the dock but it said that the console will have them too. It comes with regular grey Joy-Cons.

The game and the special edition Switch are out on August 25th in Japan.

Seeing as local play is not supported with the 3DS, then it’s really not worth bringing the 3DS version to the West. I would have bought both versions otherwise.

The trailer actually shows the regular X version of monster hunter on 3DS transferring to the Switch. So there is hope for everyone outside Japan who has that version yet!

I know it’s a low quality video – but from the looks, it’s a straight port of the 3DS versions. Doesn’t look like there will be any enhancements outside the resolution.

I mean, I’m buying it! I’m just saddened it looks like there won’t be further graphics enhancements.

Will it be like Monster Hunter 3 Ultimate on Wii U and 3DS where the Wii U version re-used the assets from the 3DS version of the game, making it look ugly as sin compared to the Wii version (especially the water surface)? and also performed worse than the Wii version (but we got dynamic shadows!!! Ooooh awesome!!!!! /sarcasm)?

Monster Hunter 3 Tri (Wii) was way better than Monster Hunter 3 Ultimate (Wii U):

      – Wii game looked way better visually. The Wii game didn’t have dynamic shadows but literally everything else looked significantly better compared to the Wii U version, especially dark areas and water surfaces.

      – Wii version performs way better (consistent 30FPS instead of frequently varying)

      – Wii Version has better balancing for large monsters when playing in a group (way more HP when doing a quest that involves multiple large monsters, making you have to actually fight instead of killing them in 30 seconds).

      – Wii version supported a superior Private Messaging system. If you are in a lobby you could PM anyone else in that Lobby by pressing Tab on the keyboard to cycle through player names until the right one was displayed, type your message and press Enter (The addressee’s name doesn’t shorten the length of your message). You can use this process to PM someone that has already set out on a quest and people on a quest can use this system to PM people on different quests or not on any quest so long as that person is a member of the same Lobby you’re utilizing.

      – Wii Version also has a Shopping List feature. Go to a crafting shop, look at a weapon or piece of gear and select one or more ingredients that it requires to add it to your Shopping List. When you are out on a hunt you can review your shopping list, the game will also play a Chime when you have enough of an ingredient to meet a Shopping List requirement. For example, if you needed 3 Wyvern Fangs for a Helmet and 6 Wyvern Fangs for a Chest Armour and you added the Wyvern Fang ingredient for the Helmet to your shopping list and the Wyving Fang ingredient for the Chest Armour to your Shopping List than you will hear a chime when you obtain 3 Wyvern Fangs and another chime when you obtain 6 Wyvern Fangs while out on a quest (and can review your shopping list any time).

The Wii game also featured underwater combat which me and my friends enjoyed.

The Wii U versions also had underwater combat? So I don’t know what your talking about with that. It was an enhanced Tri.

Most of your complaints don’t really feel valid. 3U was the same across 3DS and Wii U and was balanaced to improve gameplay as far as I’m aware. You sure it wasn’t just your improved skill level that made the game feel easier?

And as an owner of all 3, yes 3U wasn’t pushed as hard as the console could handle – but it looked vastly superior to the Wii! I only recall the swamp area looking better due to all the murky textures and graphics quality making everything eerier on the Wii.

Chat system – totally valid. Cant comment on that as its the only thing I never really did.

So, from what I can guess from the advert is that it’s a port of Cross, to the Switch, with cross-compatibility, local multiplayer… sounds fun!

I think I stopped playing the last on the 3DS without too much Hunter Ranking progress, my least played to date… here’s hoping that this will turn that around!

Perhaps you didn’t use Component A/V on the Wii? If you used the composite A/V cable that came with the console than it would look pretty bleh due to colour bleed and everything looking blurry slightly. Swimming was removed after Tri and has yet to make a return (maybe this XX game will see the return of underwater swimming).

3 Ultimate removed the levels and/or tweaked existing levels to remove access to areas that had swimmable water.
