Countless ideas for improving the original necessitated a full-blown sequel

According to Shigeru Miyamoto, the games designer, the development team of Super Mario Galaxy werent able to include several new ideas that they really wanted.

"As soon as the project was over, we started making something that we might call version 1.5. We did things like moving or adding stars to levels that were already available. As we made progress with this 1.5, we realised that there were too many things to fit into a version 1.5. That made us realise we should start from scratch and make Super Mario Galaxy 2."

Its not often that we see sequels to Nintendos big franchises on the same console, but the development team had in fact had so many ideas for the new game that they just couldnt wait for the arrival of new hardware.

Would you have been happy with some sort of add-on level pack (lets call it "Super Mario Galaxy Plus") if it was released earlier, or are you stoked about their decision to make an entire sequel? How the new game dares to be better than the original masterpiece is unimaginable, but well soon find out when Super Mario Galaxy 2 blasts onto shelves in June.
