The latest Iwata Asks feature has hit the Japanese Nintendo site and some good folk have translated it already. This installment features Shigeru Miyamoto talking about Super Mario Galaxy 2 which is out in just a few weeks in the US and Japan. As usual the feature covers the development process and it’s an interesting insight into how Nintendo work, one that you usually don’t see.
Miyamoto has revealed that working on another 3D Mario so soon after the first reminded him of when Nintendo worked on Ocarina of Time and Majora’s Mask. The Zelda sequel, which was very uncommon in those days by Nintendo, was easier to make due to Nintendo already having the entire framework from Ocarina of Time to work with and working on Super Mario Galaxy 2 has reminded him of this. He says that small things like player movements can take an year to get right when starting a game from scratch and Miyamoto felt that it would be a waste not to go back to Galaxy and use what was already there and expand it. The gaming community joked when Super Mario Galaxy 2 was announced that it was more of a Super Mario Galaxy 1.5, funny that because that’s what they called it internally. However, as we know now there is a entire new game in there. The entire two years spent on the game was spent on level design and fine tuning the game.
Galaxy 2 is also different in that it starts off at ‘full acceleration’. So no slow build up of powers or moves, it’s all there from the start. This also makes the game harder Miyamoto says, stating that it causes him to slam tables and shout while playing. However Iwata’s idea of the bonus DVD and the Hint TV’s throughout the game should help the newbies at the game so that they don’t get overwhelmed. Miyamoto also worked on the text editing in this one, something he hasn’t done since Super Mario 64. While Miyamoto found it quite fun, it caused other staffers a lot of trouble but we’re sure they didn’t really mind Shiggy helping them out.
Super Mario Galaxy 2 is out in Australia sometime in June, what day exactly we have no idea.
