Miyamoto happy where 3DS hardware is, thinking of a ‘future generation of handheld’

Rumours and speculation have kept the ‘Nintendo 3DS Redesign’ bandwagon rolling not soon after launch. Then before E3 kicked off earlier this month the Japanese newspaper Nikkei reported that a 3DS XL was coming. Nintendo denied it of course. It would have, even if it was coming.

People have been clamouring for a Nintendo 3DS with a second analogue stick, bigger screens, better battery and more. However it appears you might have to wait for the next Nintendo portable for all that and more if Shigeru Miyamoto has any say in it.

Speaking in an interview with IGN, Miyamoto was asked directly if another Nintendo 3DS was on the way. It appears that at the moment, it’s a clear no.
I really feel like I’m satisfied with the 3DS hardware as it is. I feel like it’s the best for this generation. What we’re thinking about right now is probably going to be for a future generation of handheld.
However as much as everyone loves Miyamoto, he isn’t ‘Nintendo’. Well, not all of it anyway and if Nintendo are going to release a redesign of the Nintendo 3DS he might not have much say in it.

While I’ve always said that a 3DS redesign isn’t coming anytime soon, I don’t really like the way Miyamoto thinks of these things. “I really feel like I’m satisfied with the 3DS hardware as it is. I feel like it’s the best for this generation.” Seems kinda selfish. It’ll be the consumer who decides if a redesign is required. I guess that’s why he’s not the business side of Nintendo.

He was just thinking from his point of view. How is that selfish? Is it selfish of you to say, “Gay marriage shouldn’t be legalised” if that’s your opinion, and someone asked for your opinion?

I’m not a major figure in a business though. No one would care for my opinion in such a matter. I’m just saying Miyamoto needs to be more careful/diplomatic with what he says. It shouldn’t be about what he thinks, it should be about what consumers think.

Yeh I’ve become quite disenchanted with Miyamoto in recent years. New Super Mario Bros 2 is the most uninspired mario game I’ve ever seen.
And, after 5 years of waiting, Zelda: SS was a massive disappointment. Fi absolutely ruined most of the experience, with nintendo insistent on holding your hand to make sure you get through the whole game.
Also, as a left hander, I was extremely disappointed that SS didn’t support both hands. As if they couldn’t have built this game with such an option.

To be fair I think SS was more Aonuma’s doing than Miyamoto’s. I imagine Miyamoto could’ve fixed things but I don’t think he saw anything wrong like we did. NSMB2 looks more like a Wario Land game atm, with the emphasis on getting all the coins. That’s not what Mario is about.

Fair enough about Zelda (except it was more Eiji Aonuma than Shiggie), but Miyamoto said he’s not very involved at all in either of the two NSMB games in development. It’s all down to Takashi Tezuka. (I think it’s him, it’s the guy who worked on games like Super Mario World and Super Mario 3D Land.)
