Minecraft for New 3DS won’t be getting the Better Together update

I'm shocked. Shocked I tell you!

During the Nintendo Direct yesterday, it was revealed that Minecraft would be coming to the New 3DS family of consoles, but don’t expect it to be the definitive version of the game.

Aubrey Norris, who works on the Minecraft team, in response to a fan question, tweeted that the New 3DS version of the game will not be receiving the Better Together update. This shouldn’t really come as a surprise to anyone, as the game currently doesn’t feature any multiplayer at all, although it is scheduled to receive local multiplayer through an update sometime in the future.

For those who don’t know, the Better Together update is a game-wide overhaul of Minecraft, which will introduce a new engine, infinite world sizes, more frequent updates, and give Switch owners the ability to play with others on Xbox One, Mobile and Windows 10 versions of the game. The Switch is scheduled to receive the update sometime this spring, however the Wii U and now the 3DS will not.

There’s still no word on when the New 3DS version of Minecraft will launch in Australia, and the only information we have is that it will come “soon”. We’ll keep you updated, but hey, in the meantime, you can play the very excellent Switch version.
