The Japanese Wii site has updated with a new series of interviews with the developers of the Mii Channel, in it they discuss the development of the channel and show off the original DS version of the Miis. The interview in Japanese explains that there was ideas for Wii games to design there own characters, but also a project to develop DS software for that. It was out of the blue that Nintendo decided to merge the two projects and make the project part of the Wii system functions and not a stand alone game as first presumed.

You can check out the interview here, it has the first look at the Miis on DS.
