Everyones favourite plumber has a new claim to fame – receiving over 172 hugs in 20 minutes and a potential world record for most hugs for a mascot

As part of Nintendo’s promotion for the very excellent Super Mario Galaxy 2 (it’s out today!), Mario himself was present for the launch of the game in Melbourne early this morning. The launch event at the Nintendo Experience part of EB Game’s Swanston Street store in Melbourne was host to hundreds of Mario fans champing at the bit to be the first in the country to get their mitts on the critically lauded new Wii game.

Mario inspires a nation of future plumbers.

Nintendo Australia have informed us that the record is in the process of being formally recognised by The World Record Academy. What has been guaranteed, however, is the sheer awesomeness of the latest Mario venture on Wii, possibly the best game of this generation.

There was added incentive for those willing to brave the cold as there was one copy of the game up for grabs signed by the Mario creator himself, Shigeru Miyamoto. The Vooks team was on hand and we’ll have a full recap of the launch soon.

Check out our review of the amazing new game here.
