Iwata puts to rest DS, Wii successor confusion

At a recent investors meeting, the Nintendo CEO clears up a couple of rumours about the capabilities of the next DS and Wii HD

The DS successor confusion came about when a Nintendo of America spokesperson came out and stated that comments Satoru Iwata had made about the next DS in an interview with Japanese newspaper, Asahi Shimbun, were misinterpreted. Iwata was reported to have said that the DS would have a high-resolution screen and motion sensing.

A few weeks later, the newspaper defended its reporter, claiming that “the article quoted Nintendo President Satoru Iwata’s comment accurately”.

Well, we can now reveal that, according to Iwata, the reporter who conducted the interview asked "The next DS will need to have high resolution graphics and include a motion sensor, wouldnt you say?" Iwatas response was, "Those are naturally considered requirements. However, do you believe it will sell with just this?" Apparently, the newspaper didn’t print the last bit, so you can understand how the meaning could have changed.

On the Wii side of things, Iwata was asked whether Nintendo’s next home console, branded ‘Wii HD’ on the interweb, would support HD resolutions. Iwata denied having ever spoken of a Wii HD, but he said this: "If asked if making the Wii compatible with high definition — just making it compatible with high resolution — will get players throughout the world to buy it, I would of course say, Do you think it would sell with just that? It needs something new.

"If there were no rival makers in the world, Id could give examples of the things that we are considering. However, for competitive reasons, I cannot give specifics today on the what or when of the things were considering."
