Iwata: 3DS will be a console for "serious gamers"

The CEO confirms Nintendos wider embrace of external publishers and intent to work more closely with developers

At E3, Nintendo boasted of the enormous third-party support behind the 3DS, with titles like Resident Evil Revelations, Dead or Alive 3D and Pro Evolution Soccer among many others already in development for the console.

In an interview with Nikkei, Satoru Iwata revealed that Nintendo has shifted in focus from first- to third-party development after recognising that the current DS games cater for the expanded audience just a little too much. As such, Iwata wants the 3DS to feature "elaborate games targeting serious gamers", and says Nintendo went the extra mile when making the 3DS by incorporating the ideas of software developers. Iwata believes "these partnerships are good for both Nintendo and the software developers".

Iwata also addressed speculation that the Wiis successor would support 3D output, saying that it will be a while before we see this on a home console "because 3D televisions will not catch on right away".
