Iwata: 3DS Wi-Fi only until mobile service can be delivered without cost
Nintendo dont want you paying mobile fees so they wont be including mobile into the 3DS
The Nintendo 3DSs SpotPass feature is an interesting one, it allows you to communicate via the internet ,even with the Nintendo 3DS in sleep mode when near a Wi-Fi hotspot. With more and more wireless networks blanketing cities youll be able to keep your 3DS connected; downloading new maps, rankings, ghost data and more even when the 3DS is asleep. However while Japan and America enjoy a high rate of places offering free wireless Internet, in countries like Australia, this is a lot less common. So what about 3G data or a mobile network? Iwata doesnt want you to have to fork out for such a service.
Things wont always be the same with Iwata telling investors that "…the spread of such devices as portable Wi-Fi routers and the emerging new communication technologies such as LTE … Nintendo may be able to find a business model which does not require consumers to pay monthly communication fees, and we may be able to provide our consumers with a more convenient communication environment. In the future, when we may be able to find a different structure, we will be able to offer services to the real mass audiences."
The 3G version of the iPad for example sells extremely well, would you prefer a 3G version of the 3DS (and pay extra for it) or just stick to Wi-Fi networks for now? Will SpotPass be even worth the worry, or could it end up being another WiiConnect24?
