On first impressions, Ivy might look like just another 2D platformer – but there’s a twist. Instead of controlling Ivy directly, players use the Wii remote or stylus to interact with the level and create path ways consisting of vines to direct Ivy as he mindlessly charges on in a forward direction. The gameplay might take its cues from Kirby Canvas Curse, but there is a greater emphasis on puzzle solving and timing.
The game is being developed by PROPE- a Japanese studio helmed by former Sonic Creator Yuji Naka. Naka was enthusiastic about the publishing deal made with XSEED, a company focussed on delivering strongly Japanese games to western audiences – “I am thrilled to work with XSEED Games on this special new game property…This game idea has been something that Ive had in my mind so Im really looking forward to entrusting Jun Iwasaki (president of XSEED) and his talented team to bring Ivy the Kiwi to market so that fans can have an opportunity to engage with the endearing cast of characters and experience the magical world of Ivy.”
Visually, the muted colour palette of earthy tones are a far cry from the bright clean colours of Sonic, evoking a very Autumn-like feel to the game. There’s over 100 stages to travel through as well as four-way local multiplayer thrown in for good measure.
We’re looking at a third quarter release for the game overseas, with an Aussie release hopefully around the same time.
