Move aside pretenders, Nintendos unstoppable handheld has finally claimed the title of best-selling system ever in the land down under

We already knew last week that the figure of 2.5 million units sold was a record-setter, but the latest announcement from video game retail tracker GfK makes it official. GfK has announced that the DS has succeeded the Sony PlayStation 2 as the highest-selling video game system in Australia since the organisation started tracking sales figures.

Nintendo enjoyed an enviable 67% market share of hardware sales for 2009, with Wii and DS claiming a bigger piece of the pie last year than they did in 2008.

The head of Nintendo Australia Limited, Rose Lappin, was understandably ecstatic at Nintendo’s achievement. "2009 was an exciting year for Nintendo… We released a new console with Nintendo DSi and some great games, as well as Wii MotionPlus. 2010 looks to be a big year for Nintendo again, we have Nintendo DSi XL coming, as well as some big titles across both consoles."
