The patent details a directory system that accesses hard drive partitions that contain games copied from a DVD. The games loaded on the hard drive would form a library that can be cycled through, with each individual game viewable as the game’s box art along with associated game information.
The patent filing is official. If Nintendo choose to follow through and produce this system for the Wii (or a future hardware revision), then it shows they are willing to incorporate hard drive functionality- something still desired by Wii-owners despite the improved SD card functionality that opened up last year. It also shows a shift towards a disc-free hardware platform, something that we see on other modern home consoles.
