Kotaku has discovered from inside sources that the Nintendo Wii is to receive a retail boost in the form of price drops for both console and games.
Nintendo will be dropping the price of the console to US$149 in North America this month, the sources believe. The price drop will also usher in a range of budget titles called Wii Select. This US$19.99 line will kick off with The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess, Mario Super Sluggers and Super Smash Bros. Brawl.
The console bundle will also ditch the system staple Wii Sports and instead pack in Mario Kart Wii. Wii Sports will continue to be sold as a standalone SKU. Both the bundle and the range will be released on May 15th, or so we are led to believe.
With the 2011 release list looking scarce for Wii and with a successor on the horizon, this is the best strategy Nintendo can take at the moment. As per usual, Nintendo of America representatives confirmed that “Nintendo does not comment on rumours or speculation.”
