Reckon that Mario and Link are Nintendos most important assets? Think again. Nintendo has revealed that Imagination is what has made the company so successful.

Tom Prata of Nintendo America has reflected on his history at Nintendo to Edge Magazine, highlighting the shift the company took during the Gamecube years away from technical progress towards creative progress. Prata had worked with Satoru Iwata in promoting Nintendo-developed hardware to Americans, and quoted his boss as having said “The future was not defined by graphical performance, but by the nature of the interactive experience.”

When Prata himself was pressed by Edge’s interviewers as to Nintendo’s most important properties such as icons Mario and Donkey Kong, Prata rebuked that they were “not our most precious assets” and that is was the imagination and creative talent of the Nintendo team in driving such projects.

Let’s all hope that their imagination doesn’t run out any time soon.
