Wii U to Wii U system transfer now available in new 5.1.0 firmware update

About time!

Nintendo has released a software update for the Wii U which introduces Wii U to Wii U transfers. Previously you had to phone Nintendo and send your Wii U into support to possibly be able do this, but now, just like the Nintendo 3DS transfer you can transfer your Wii U software data to a new Wii U from within the settings.

Just like the Nintendo 3DS as well the original Wii U will be erased and returned to factory settings. However, unlike the 3DS the transfer only transfers software data and profiles. Actual game files and save data will not be transferred across and games will have be redownloaded. You can see a full list of what is and what is not transferred here and there’s also a full FAQ.

This firmware update also adds the ability to browse the Wii U eShop with a Wii Remote or Wii U Pro Controller. So that’s nifty too. There are also a round a ‘stability’ updates as per usual.

So is Wii U to Wii U transfer something you’d need to use in the future or been holding out for? It’s still not quite the same as being able use your NNID on any console now though is it?

Just FYI, save data from games IS transferred (according to that link you provided anyways)

Feels almost pointless to do a system transfer unless they release special edition models… or your transferring into a whole new region? (region unlock would fix)

So what happens if a family shares a console, then the older kid wants to move out, get a Wii U of their own and take their account with them??? It SHOULD be an account transfer system, NOT a whole system transfer -.-

It also looks like, as long as you have your games downloaded to a hard drive you just plug that hard drive into the new Wii U and away you go, no need to re download unless you have them saved to internal storage.
