Hori announces three new Gamecube-styled controllers for Switch

Just in time for Smash

Officially-licensed accessory maker Hori has been pumping out Switch accessories lately, and it looks like they’re stepping up to the plate for Super Smash Bros. Ultimate later this year.

Revealed by Hori today were three new Gamecube-styled classic controllers for the Switch, adorned with designs from Nintendo’s three biggest franchises — Pokemon, Mario, and Zelda. Each controller comes with all the buttons you need for playing just about any Switch game, including L/R and ZL/ZR buttons and a proper d-pad, as well as home and screenshot buttons, something the official Smash Gamecube controllers lack. The best part? They all use a USB connector, meaning no extra wires and adaptors are required.

Of course, there are some drawbacks too. There is no HD Rumble here (though it’s not specified if regular rumble is available), no gyro sensors, no player indicator LEDs, and no amiibo reader. That said, given these seem to be aimed towards Smash players, many of those features won’t be missed.

The Hori Classic Controller for Nintendo Switch is scheduled to launch in Japan in October 2018 for 2,980 yen, which is about $35 AUD. No Western release has been announced, but we’ll be sure to keep you in the loop.
