Having all fighters unlocked in Super Smash Bros Wii U, Sakurai considered it

The thrill of Challenger Approaching! though.

In a recent “Smash Bros Diaries” published in Game Informer, Masahiro Sakurai was asked questions about unlocking characters in Super Smash Bros. for Wii U.

Sakurai said he did consider just opening up all the fighters from the start on the Wii U, but eventually decided against this idea. He found that fans enjoy the “Challenger Approaching!” moments during sessions.

“there are a lot of fans who really love the “Challenger Approaching!” bits where new characters break into the battle. Even if they know who’s coming up, they still see the ensuing battle as a lot of fun. I had considered just opening up all the fighters from the start on the Wii U, but I left those fights in mainly for those kind of fans.”

He was also asked whether he thought about having character unlocks transfer from the 3DS version to Wii U, to which he replied a straight up “No”.

In addition to the thrill of the “Challenger Approaching!” moments, he made reference to the fact that unlocking all the characters is far easier in the Wii U version of Smash than it was in past titles.

On his decision to force players to unlock characters, Sakurai stands firm.

“Either way, this is a game you can still play long after you’ve unlocked everyone, so I don’t think it’s a big problem”.
