Michael Sportouch from Activision appears to have quite high ideas about Guitar Hero. Talking to MCV, he stated that Guitar Hero is the "clear leader of the [music] category." Adding to this, he had a message to retailers concerning other music games.
"One thing I do say to retailers is that they should stop selling those rival products which dont sell through," said Sportouch, "and instead focus on the products that are selling through and generate retail value and return on investment. Im not here to talk about the competition, but one of our competitors we outsell nine to one, eight to one or seven to one depending on the week. The last GfK research showed that we have a 50 per cent market share of the music category – which includes Rock Band, Wii Music, SingStar and every other music game."
Even with 50% market share, there is still plenty of room for other games in this category. The Rock Band, Wii Music, and SingStar games he mentioned all sold well, so were not quite sure what he is trying to get at here.
