Wii U

‘Grab a Wii U while you can’ says Nintendo of America’s Scott Moffitt

Supported well into 2017? Sure...

After every E3 floods our news feeds with glorious new games and trailers to enjoy, out comes the interviews held during the expo.

A new Financial Post interview has surfaced and Nintendo of America’s executive vice-president of sales, Scott Moffitt has been been quizzed on the upcoming Wii U line up. Here’s what he had to say.

We’ve announced that The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild will be coming out on both Wii U and the NX. Released at the same time for both. But it’s not the only game we’re working on and have in development for Wii U. This week we’re showing Paper Mario: Color Splash, a fantastic new game in the Paper Mario series. We’re also showing Tokyo Mirage Sessions #FE, and we have content coming from Ubisoft and others.

He continues;

And the library of games on Wii U for fans who haven’t played them all has never been more affordable thanks to the Nintendo Select line of games priced at $19.99, which continues to grow. There’s certainly plenty of content for existing Wii U owners, but there’s plenty of reasons for people who’ve never owned the console to grab one now while they last.

Just how many Wii U’s are left?

We will be transitioning production to NX, so our message to fans is to grab a Wii U while you can, because they won’t be around forever.

This new messaging from Nintendo flies in direct contradiction to what Nintendo President  Tastumi Kimishima said just a couple of months ago;

“I think our first job right now is to make sure that the customers, those 10 million customers who have a Wii U at home have software to play. And we need to make sure that they are satisfied with their purchase and continue to enjoy playing on this platform.

So we can’t just abandon them and say ‘Hey, it’s time to move on to the next thing.’

Kimishima was also quoted by Reuters saying the company “could cease production of the Wii U by March 2018”. That now doesn’t seem likely.

The Wii U has also been in limited supply in it’s home country since January this year, despite the demand for it – Nintendo has seemingly not gone in and produced many – if any new consoles.

Nintendo has tried here to hide the fact that it’s ‘killing off’ the Wii U , despite brining The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wind to it. With all the evidence and now Scott Moffitt’s quotes – it’s obvious – the Wii U is done.
