16 stores now, the rest in the coming weeks as the company enters liquidation.
GAME Australia have been in trouble for a while now and the final roll of the dice for the company has rolled against them. All Australian GAME stores will close in Australia over the coming weeks, some of them today.
PriceWaterhouseCoopers, the company’s administrations have confirmed that 16 of the remaining stores will close right away and the final 15 to slowly close over the coming weeks.
“In the interests of creditors, the 31 remaining Game stores are to be closed over the coming weeks and a final closing down sale has commenced with discounts of up to 60 percent available in-store and online” said the administrators in a statement to GameSpot AU.
“This is a difficult time for employees and closing the stores was not a decision we made easily. Despite exploring available opportunities for continued trading, the ongoing trading performance and absence of viable offers for the purchase of the business has resulted in these closures.”
Some silver lining in the dark, dark cloud is that remaining staff will be offered help from the governments General Employee Entitlements and Redundancy Scheme. However this prabably won’t help the staff who were let go in the original store closings.
A meeting in the coming days will decide what happens next with GAME Australia as a company.
