First week sales of New Super Mario Bros. Wii in Japan are impressive

Over 900,000 copies of NSMBWii were sold in Japan in its opening week, 422,000 of which in the first day

Mario? Check. 2D? Check. On the console with the largest install base? Check. It comes as no surprise to anyone Im sure but New Super Mario Bros. Wii has sold over 900,000 copies in its first week on sale in Japan. This now makes it the fastest selling game for its opening week.

Previously the only games that have come close on Wii have been Super Smash Bros. Brawl on 816k, Mario Kart Wii on 608k and the only third party title Monster Hunter 3 on 582k.

The big question remains though, can this pull the Wii hardware out of the slump that it has been under in Japan?

New Super Mario Bros. Wii debuted at #3 on the Aussie charts and has since bounced up to 1st where it has remained. No figures for Australia have yet (or probably) been released.
