Unlockable multiplayer mode to feature in the new Sonic game

About a week ago a screenshot of Sonic Colours, the brand new game in the Sonic franchise for Wii and DS, was revealed and showed what looked to be a multiplayer mode, although no information was given about said multiplayer mode. Well Sega has recently revealed some details regarding co-op play in Sonic Colours, confirming the presence of co-op play in the latest instalment of the Sonic franchise.

Sega has revealed that you have to unlock the multiplayer stages by collecting special hidden rings hidden throughout the main story mode. Once you have unlocked a multiplayer stage you just select the multiplayer option from the main menu and away you go. These co-op levels are completely separate from the main game and are designed specifically with cooperative play in mind. You play as two "robo-Sonics" in levels that are simulations designed by Sonics arch nemesis, Dr. Eggman.

You can combine "Colour" abilities, the power-ups of the main game, as well; for example, you can combine the "Laser" and "Drill" Colour abilities to create an ultra powerful drill that can drill faster through underground terrain. Unlike New Super Mario Bros. Wiis multiplayer mode, however, there will be sections in which you must help each other out to progress. There is a pulley system that requires both players to air dash into each other over and over to move upward and reach higher areas, for example.

Well find out whether or not the multiplayer is something to shout about when it hits Australia on Novemeber 11.
