Final Fantasy V and VI remakes may be possible on 3DS
Square Enix may not have been able to bring the RPG classic to DS, but with the powerful new hardware of the 3DS, they may be considering handheld remakes
Earlier this year, Final Fantasy producer Shinji Hashimoto cited technical limitations of the DS as being a hurdle in recreating Final Fantasy V and VI for the platform. The publisher had remade Final Fantasy III and IV for the DS, both with a completely overhauled design and 3D engine, and many fans were wondering when the last two 2D entries in the timeless franchise would receive the same treatment. The team who developed the remakes has since moved on to produce the DS-only ‘Final Fantasy: Four Warriors of Light’.
Now, with the 3DS looming as the next handheld platform to take control of the world, Squeenix may be looking to develop remakes on the new system. Speaking to Siliconera at E3 last week, Hashimoto stated that “Rather than creating [Final Fantasy] V or VI for the current DS we want to take a look to see how 3DS does, how it evolves, and then make a decision.”
That means no guarantees but at least they’re going to test it out. We’ve seen some impressive performance on the 3DS and are hopeful that it will have the computational grunt to run an engine worthy enough for two of the most revered entries in the Final Fantasy series.
