Last Thursday Nintendo Australia assembled some of the best Mario Kart players in the country all in one room and let them loose on nearly every iteration of Mario Kart from the past 25 years. Why? To find Australia’s Fastest Mario Kart racer.
Taking place at the Hotel CBD in Sydney, 100 or more players were put to the test. Each racer from each site, had to clock their fastest time on Super Mario Kart, Mario Kart 64, Mario Kart Double Dash and Mario Kart Wii. It was do or die, everyone only had one go (on each of the games) and if you arrived late or hadn’t been practicing in the lead up to the event you were at a severe disadvantage.
Think you’re pretty good at Koopa Troopa beach on Mario Kart 64? More people missed the tunnel on that track then hit it right, Mario Kart Wii was a complicated one too with different control schemes favoring different people. Double Dash as always was about the right combination for the track and nearly everyone struggled with Super Mario Kart on the SNES. Except though who got the top two on the night.
So each team essentially had 10 goes at making a place in the final for themselves, sadly all Vookian racing members missed out on the top two spots of the night, but considering the competition on the night (who are amazing) we shouldn’t feel to bad. Did you know you can make the jump on Koopa Troopa beach without a Mushroom? Yeah, you had to beat that kind of skill.
The event then came down to a 8 player race on Special Cup in Mario Kart 7. The top two racers from each of the games time trials were selected to race with one of the players being displayed on the big screen.
There was of course much fun to be had off the racetrack as well with members from various sites being able to catch up with each other or even meet for the first time. Personally it was great to meet so many readers of the site on our team and even the members who weren’t.
Gotta go fast.
It is a Holiday Gaming Extravaganza
Some really great deals.
