ESRB watch: Gauntlet finally coming to DS
Ataris fantasy brawling arcade classic Gauntlet has shown up on Americas ESRB ratings board, signalling that the handheld version is indeed still in development by Backbone Entertainment.
The title looks to be published by Majesco- an odd move considering that the game was originally announced by Eidos Interactive. The game was initially announced for an October 28 release last year, but disappeared into development hell with rumours that Eidos had cancelled the title. Confirmation of the game’s existence is a just reward for fans of the series who petitioned Eidos to continue development.
The original Gauntlet was released in arcades in 1985 and was one of the first action fantasy games to employ co-operative class-based multiplayer. There have been several iterations since, all built around the same 4-player hack-and-slash combat. The last entry in the Gauntlet series was 2005’s ‘Gauntlet: Seven Sorrows’
Assuming Backbone haven’t made any drastic changes, we can expect the DS version to feature 4-way online support in addition to local multiplayer.
