E3 2014: Super Smash Bros for 3DS and Wii U information explosion

A smashing time coming this October.

Nintendo’s E3 Digital Event was bookended by Smash Bros., with two character reveals. A video of an epic fight between Reggie and Iwata (yeah, really) led into a reveal of Miis as playable characters. Sakurai decided to add them into the new Smash Bros. after deciding that seeing them fighting in Brawl wouldn’t seem right.

There are three different ‘classes’ of Miis: the Brawler, Gunner and Swordfighter; each with different moves. And on top of that, their moveset customisation allows you to pick from even more moves for them to use! The Brawler fights with their fists, and specialises in close-range combat. The Gunner has a blaster on their arm, and has a variety of projectile attacks. And finally, the Swordfighter, as you’d expect, fights with a sword. You’ll be able to use any of your Miis in the game, and can pick any of the movesets for them to use.

The second character reveal was at the end of the conference with an anime cutscene, where Palutena from Kid Icarus steps in to a fight between Pit and Link, to fight Link. She uses a variety of magical attacks based off of her appearance in Kid Icarus Uprising, and features some impressive mobility options.
Nintendo also had a teaser reel of the variety of modes and features of the game.

There are some familiar ones returning from past games like the Home Run Contest and the ability to save screenshots and videos, and some new ones like Smash Run and what appeared to be a boardgame mode which sees you moving across a board and triggering battles against different characters.

Finally, some brief details were given on the figurine capabilities of the Wii U version of the game as part of the Amiibo system. There are a bunch of figures being released based off some of the game’s characters, like Mario, Link, Wii Fit Trainer and Villager. These figures summon a character into the game when placed on the GamePad, who can fight with you or against you. As they fight, they’ll gain experience and become tougher opponents, and you’ll also be able to customise their movesets.

Super Smash Bros. for 3DS launches October 3rd, while a release date for the Wii U version has not yet been specified – but it is this year.
