Disney Infinity 3.0: Toy Box Takeover Review

Disney Infinity as you thought it should be.

The latest instalment of Disney Infinity is the biggest in the series so far, there’s a ton of content in the Starter Pack and you should read our review of it. There is however one problem with Disney Infinity that still has been nagging away in the background. While your imagination can take you anywhere in the Toy Box there still hasn’t been a proper, well built ‘multi-franchise’ adventure in Disney Infinity. Star Wars characters play in their world, Marvel in theirs and Disney in theirs – until now.

Toy Box Takeover is the first Toy Box expansion game, one in which you can play through a structured story with whoever you wish and mix and match worlds. You can take on Davey Jones with Iron Man and Elsa while the Jungle Book soundtrack is playing, that’s just something you can’t do anywhere else and with in story.

The story for the Takeover involves Syndrome from The Incredibles. He’s gone and stolen Mickey’s magic wand, you know the one you use to build the crazy things in the Toy Box. His idea? Terror. This isn’t just a more advanced game built in the Toy Box, it has cutscenes and voice acting to go along with it.

Toy Box Takeover is your quint-essential Dungeon Crawler, it’s even locked to an isometric viewpoint. Takeover can be played by your lonesome, with a sidekick, split-screen locally with a friend or partner or online with a few more friends.

The sidekick system is more developed in Takeover than Disney Infinity 2.0, you now have to take care of them more and feed them with food from the new Farming mode that’s in the Toy Box. There’s other ways to feed them if you’re not into cultivation. There’s weapons and hats for the Sidekicks to wear and more are discovered through playing through Takeover and the Toy Box, you can create a really powerful sidekick before the game is even over.

There’s a number of worlds in the game, Pirates of the Caribbean, Marvel, Lone Ranger, Star Wars and the Hero Destroyer. That last one is a randomly generated world which plays to the games ‘looting’ strengths that the dungeon crawler sub-genre bring. The game is only a few hours long and this last randomly generated world makes what would otherwise be a repetitive act if you had to play through the same worlds over and over.

The improved combat from the main game also makes the game more interesting to play with other characters. In Disney Infinity 2.0 all of the characters in the toy box felt the same and did the same damage. Now with the improvements each character brings its own pros and cons to the game, some characters work better on some levels than others. The bosses can also be kinda of brutal on anything other than easy.

Toy Box Takeover finally allows you to play through an Infinity game using characters from many different worlds in a story driven experience. It feels less like a game made in the Toy Box and more like a game that is ‘inspired by’ the Toy Box. The presentation, cut scenes and voice acting legitimise it and allow those with a lack of imagination to play through a Toy Box game properly.

Toy Box Takeover will be released sometime in October for a RRP of $24.95 AUD.
