Dick Smith’s owners are ‘accelerating’ their ‘consolidation of gaming’

While a war of words continues to be fought on the internet, for the most part the dust has settled on the Dick Smith Clearance sale which caused a comotion on Monday. Along with the original news of the sale, it was also reported by EcoGamer and ourselves that Dick Smith would cease to sell video games completely. Dick Smith refuted the comment saying on Facebook in direct response to our story that they “Dick Smith will continue to sell gaming bigger & better than ever! When they officially announced the sale later on in the day, they also stated again that “Contrary to some reports, Dick Smith will continue to sell Gaming.”

However today news came via the Australian Financial Review that parent company Woolworths is in the process of accelerating ‘consolidation of gaming’ after doing a full business review. “This isn’t about clearing out to restock again.”

“There are games stores and online gaming specialists, so we’ll leave that market largely to them and just have a very core range of titles and much tighter purchasing strategies.”

It appears that Dick Smith then will stock more select titles, we suspect big AAA-tier games and hardware will be all they will stock anymore. It should be noted that Woolworths is currently in the process of looking for a buyer of the Dick Smith brand and that a new buyer could reverse this decision.

Rumours persist that Dick Smith launched the sale early and that another sale may be on the way. However only time will tell if that happens.

That’s what one of my mates from the Mt Pleasant store here is saying, supposedly next wednesday or thursday, in which case I’ll be either using my free time at uni or skipping a day altogether to go to it.
