Getting a job at Nintendo in Japan isn't easy...
Ten years ago aspiring game developer Corey Bunnell wanted to work for Nintendo. But didn’t know how or to where to start, so he asked on a forum for some help.
Now Corey Bunnell not only works for Nintendo but has worked on The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild. His name appears in the credits under ‘Wildlife Programming’ and is among on the few non-Japanese names on the list.
The post on the forum asked;
My dream is to live in Japan and work for Nintendo as a game designer. I realize this is a very large goal but it has been my dream since I first played Mario. I need help figuring out how to achieve this goal. I know I would need to goto a game design school of some sort, and also get my Japanese to a level where I can speak and write professionally.
Well he made it. Corey not only just works at Nintendo, but Nintendo in Japan, a country where getting a job as a foreigner isn’t the easiest thing to do. He didn’t just jump straight from the forum to Nintendo however, Bunnell shows up in a video for the Japanese University he attended and mentions interning at a video game company and then getting a full time gig.
We’re going to guess that might be Nintendo. “I want to make a game that everyone can enjoy, the whole world,” Bunnell says at the end of the video. According to Kyoto Report, a site that tracks Nintendo staff movements, their data shows that that Bunnell join Nintendo in 2014, the same year that he graduated from university.
He’s also in the staff photo from the GDC presentation, check out the top left of the group – the guy with the pink shirt.
So remember, no matter how hard a goal or dream might seem – anything is possible.
