Castlevania heading to both Wii U and 3DS
According to the reliable source Paul Gale, titles for both the Wii U and Nintendo 3DS will be playable at this year’s E3. Castlevania: Lord of Shadows 2 (a sequel to the 2010 action/adventure title for PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360) is coming to the Wii U, alongside other major platforms. Coming to 3DS exclusively is Castlevania: Mirror of Fate, a 2D entry in the series with an emphasis on using the 3DS’ multiple cameras to solve problems. It’s also likely that the two games will feature connectivity, possibly for co-operative play.
If you wish to know more about Lord of Shadows 2, it might be an idea to look up some footage or reviews of the original title. Regarding the Wii U version specifically, Paul had some more interesting things to share. Originally a Wii U Castlevania had been planned to be a similar game to Mirror of Fate, treating the Wii U tablet screen and television set as the 3DS’ bottom and top screen respectively. This was to allow the game to be played across both platforms. However this idea was shelved, for better or for worse as it would be safer for Konami to do an upgraded port of Lord of Shadows 2. However it’s said that some of the connectivity between both games will remain. In addition, it’s still possible that the development of a unique Wii U Castlevania could occur.
Castlevania: Mirror of Fate stars two playable characters, whose identities are currently unknown. As previously mentioned the game includes puzzles that utilise the 3DS’ multiple cameras. The frontal camera is said to act as a mirror, while the rear cameras will be used for a new puzzle solving mechanic. The game is a 2D experience, that has been in development for the last one and a half years (18 months).
It’s been a while since Castlevania has had a strong presence on Nintendo consoles (aside from the criminally overlooked Castlevania: The Adventure ReBirth for WiiWaire), so fans of the series should be very excited for these games to be shown off in a few weeks time at E3!
