Japanese gaming juggernaut Capcom tries to fight receding sales figures with more frequent software releases

Capcom has recently announced plans to increase their frequency of video game releases, including games in the Resident Evil series as well as other key titles in their collective stable, reports Japan-based publication Nikkei.

Nikkei reports that the current output of two titles per year will soon increase to three or four. The venerated Resident Evil franchise, and presumably Capcom’s other major money-makers, will make appearances. Although developing a major title requires staff of around 100, Capcom hopes to combat this by outsourcing to different studios. Although this has shown to be somewhat risky (Grin, I’m looking at you), this strategy can pay off tenfold – refer to the excellent Street Fighter IV series, produced by Dimps.

Capcom believes that this will remunerate for their average performance last year, but what does this mean for the quality of the software? Hopefully we don’t see the birth of another Activision where games are pushed out of the door for the sake of profit and not fan enjoyment.
