Well, we didnt see this one coming at all. That was sarcasm by the way. Satoru Iwata has revealed that the Wii U will play neither DVDs or Blu-ray discs. The move shouldnt surprise anyone, the GameCube couldnt physically plate them and the Wii never had the capability either. So why though? It has a 12cm optical drive, surely you can just stick one in?
Satoru Iwata has told investors that "The reason for that is that we feel that enough people already have devices that are capable of playing DVDs and Blu-ray, such that it didnt warrant the cost involved to build that functionality into the Wii U console because of the patents related to those technologies."
But never fear movie fans, Iwata has confirmed that Netflix will be on the system and yes, in HD. Not that it helps us here in Australia that is.
DVDs and Blu-ray playback on the Wii U, is it a dealbreaker for you?
