When it was announced and the initial screens were revealed the Reflex Edition on Call of Duty 4 was mocked across the internet. Everyone thought it was going to be a quick cash in on the game and a affront to Wii owners but giving them the “second hand” game instead of an iteration of Modern Warfare 2. However, we’ve had some time with the game today and tried out a few missions and some online and are happy to report that it’s not actually that bad- in fact, it’s quite good.
First up, single player. It’s all there – all the missions, all the music, all the action and it runs at a nice stable frame rate. Yes, it isn’t as pretty as its HD cousins but it does run smoothly and isn’t a compromised experience. In fact, due to the Wii Remote controls, the game works even better and beats even The Conduit’s controls. Don’t like the default controls? You can even adjust them to however you like with more customisation then ever.
Multiplayer is also one of the most fleshed out online modes for a Wii game and even comes close to Modern Warfare 2, as it can support up to 5v5- only 2 two less than its sequel. Getting into a game is easy and the matchmaking and balance system is exactly the same as the Xbox and Playstation experience- sans voice chat, of course. In the games I played, there was minimal lag and players joined and left without interruption.
With Call of Duty World at War last year on Wii being a great incarnation, we really shouldn’t have doubted this game too much, those screenshots they initially released were terrible, but this game is far from them. You might not want to double dip at full price, but if you only have a Wii or can’t stand dual analogue controls, then you might want to look into this.
Call of Duty Modern Warfare Reflex Edition is in stores now; we will have a more in-depth review up in the future.
