Before the Deluge: Wii offerings you may have missed!

With the mid-year gaming drought nearly at an end, the Vooks team have taken a look back at the last few months and the Wii line-up hasn’t been as bare as people have perceived it. Sure from a Nintendo point of view nothing has come out since Mario Kart Wii (19 month old Trauma Centre excluded) but Nintendo’s third parties have been offering up some good titles. Whether they were released alongside higher profile games or just didn’t get the marketing push they deserved, these 5 games certainly still deserve your attention. More inside

Boom Blox

In short: Great, exclusive, original third party IP for the Wii. Enough said.

Why you should take a second look: Boom Blox is a physics-based block game where the player has to knock down block structures, remove blocks Jenga-style or interact with the blocks in any number of other fun ways. Created in collaboration with Steven Spielberg, the game is a bright light in the Wiis much-criticised game library.

Excellent controls, plenty of things to do and most importantly, heaps of fun, Boom Blox should have been on every Wii owners to buy list. Its cheap too! Unfortunately, sales have not been as brisk as we would have liked and have nowhere near matched the quality of the title. Probably not helped by the fact that most people were expecting Steven Spielbergs first game to feature in-depth story and character development, Boom Blox should not be overlooked simply because it is not what was expected.

Zack and Wiki: The Quest for Barbaros’ Treasure

In short: Exclusive, innovative, fun, original IP. Go and buy it or we will be playing Brown Shooter Number 647 for the rest of our lives!

Why you should take a second look: Zack and Wiki probably still stands out as one of the best uses of the Wii remote so far. Great puzzle-based gameplay, charming story and quirky characters come together to make a game that will go down as one of the most under appreciated games ever. In 10 years, copies of Zack and Wiki will be selling on eBay for 10 times their original price. Why didnt it sell? Brown Shooter Number 647 had more blood, guts and swearingobviously!

Okami

In Short: Why don’t we get “”hardcore”” games on the Wii? Oh, that’s right, no one buys games like Okami.

Why you should take a second look: Not helped by its blink and youll miss it launch in Australia, Okami is a superb action adventure game that was criminally ignored by the gaming populace, not just in Australia but around the world. To make matters worse, the game was due to hit Aussie stores around the same time as Super Smash Bros. Brawl and the distributor was switched before the games release. The new distributor was sadly a company that has a track record of only ordering small supplies of games and not having a retail presence in every store. We received more emails asking us where to buy Okami than for any other game. And we’re a fansite!

So it must be good right? Well it is and is even as good, or better in some cases, than Twilight Princess. Yes blaspheming on a Nintendo game is not something we do often at Vooks, but when we get a game of the calibre of Okami, it doesn’t matter that it was a year-old PS2 port – the game stands on its own four paws and should be an essential purchase.

Pro Evolution Soccer 08

In Short: Hey, a sports game that is not just a simple upgrade of last year’s version!

Why you should take a second look: Incorporating an innovative Wii-only control scheme Pro Evolution Soccer 08 gave the player more control over the entire team than any other sports game. In fact the level of control was a standout for sports games across all consoles.

Probably suffering from being released well after other iterations, Pro Evolution Soccer 08 is a game that should be embraced by all sports fans.

No More Heroes

In Short: Adult oriented, open world, hardcore gaming on Wii. Isnt this what we were all screaming out for?

Why you should take a second look: One of the biggest criticisms of the Wii so far has been its lack of focus on hardcore gaming experiences. It has probably been a valid complaint so far, but sometimes us Wii owners have to take a fair share of the blame, especially when something like No More Heroes goes largely ignored outside of all but the most loyal Suda51 fans.

Not without its faults, No More Heroes is still a game that deserves the time of any Wii owner that considers themselves a hardcore gamer.

So there you have it, five Wii games that have gone largely ignored that could have helped you through this “”drought”” of games. So did we miss any titles, did you buy any from our list and want to share your approval? Lets us know!
