Jumpman was Marios first name, but Miyamoto has rewritten history saying he called him something even before he was Jumpman.
Its funny how everyone knows something for so long, history gets written as such and then everything is changed. Shigeru Miyamoto has revealed in a new Iwata Asks feature that Mario has a different name before ever the Jumpman moniker. According to Mr Miyamoto he was originally known as Mr. Video and he was to be the star of every video game Miyamoto made.
This inspiration to make him the same character in game comes from Hitchcock. Miyamoto thought that the way that the legendary director put himself in everyone of his movies (albeit in cameos) was neat and why couldnt his character do the same.
