Bayonetta 2 coming to Wii U Exclusively in 2013

A surprise announcement from Nintendo tonight (or this morning, depending on how you look at it) when they announced Bayonetta 2, the sequel to the absolutely fabulous Bayonetta. For those not in the know, Bayonetta is an action game designed by the creator of the original Devil May Cry games (a long with some other Capcom greats). It is considered by many to be a shining example of a perfect Japanese “stylish” action game and was well received critically but unfortunately didn’t perform up to expectations financially.

Developed by PlatinumGames, the game is directed by Yusuke Hashimoto with supervision from the original creator, Hideki Kamiya. Atsushi Inaba, who has also worked on Devil May Cry along with Viewtiful Joe, Ace Attorney, God Hand and Okami will serve as producer for the project. So it seems that it’s most definitely in good hands.

The most surprising part? It’s a Wii U exclusive and published by Nintendo themselves.

Not much was shown besides a very short announcement trailer, one mimicking the original announcement of the original game many years ago. It was a nice throwback for fans.

What we do know however is that the game won’t be out until after March 2013, as Reggie did not include it in his launch “window” line-up at the end of the conference.

Bayonetta 2 was strongly rumoured to be in development for quite some time following the original’s release, but many fans would’ve been annoyed to find it was allegedly cancelled by SEGA shortly thereafter. We’re not quite sure what has gone down here – whether Nintendo saw fit to revive the project themselves or simply bought the rights to release it from SEGA, but who can complain. We’re getting more Bayonetta!

Bastards! Why would they release it on the successor to a console that never saw the original while leaving those that did play the first out in the cold? Sheer marketing brilliance by Nintendo perhaps, as it is easily the strongest reason to force some people to buy a WiiU. I loved the first game but the WiiU looks even more like a toy than the Wii ever did, so I’m still not sold on the console.

I’m really surprised Bayonetta 2 is going to be a Wii U exclusive! Clearly that means no connectivity between the first game and the second.

Regardless, I’ll be getting it because Bayonetta is an amazing game!

Maybe the original will see a port on the Wii U, or they could add in some extra bits in the sequel that give some insight into the original.
