Bayers DS-enabled glucose reader will help out Diabetic kids
German pharmaceutical giant have developed Didget – a glucose-reading device that plugs into Nintendo DS handhelds in order to assist children with diabetes
Using the DS and DSLite’s GBA slot, the Didget encourages children to track their blood-glucose levels. The device comes with game-like software that rewards children who frequently test their blood with the device and keep their glucose levels balanced. Bayer’s already widely used CONOTOUR system that tracks glucose levels over time was integrated into the software, disguising an otherwise uncomfortable task for kiddies as a game.
The device was designed to take advantage of the fact that children are rarely without their modern handhelds, thus eliminating the requirement for them to regularly carry their medical tools.
Unfortunately, as the device can only connect to the DS’s GBA slot – a feature removed from the recently released DSi – the peripheral will not be available for DSi owners.
