Dick Smith have just sent out a email blast with their latest deals, the biggest of which is 50% on a Premium Wii U Console.

That’s 50% off, that means they have console for $214!

Two hundred and fourteen dollars.

There’s one problem, Dick Smith haven’t been restocking gaming stuff for a while – so hopefully you local store has one.

Well off you go, go get a cheap Wii U

As a bonus there’s some cheap games and accessories on Dick Smith’s site for the 50% off as well. At the time of writing these were still in stock;

Picked up a pro controller and Mario Bros. Hardly any stock left and i was there bang on 9am. Not a good sign when they say they are clearing out Wii U stuff.

I think they’re trying to move away from selling games and due to the poor sales of the WiiU the majority of their stock is made up of consoles and games. I already have a wiiu and I wouldn’t ignore this deal.

Managed to get a white pro controller and that’s about it… Feels very GameCubeish again. So sad, did Nintendo get arrogant?

Any chance EB will price match on this?

Sad to see that the Wii U has now hit the ‘bargain bin’ status at Dick Smith. I think Nintendo is really struggling to gain any ground anywhere globally with the Wii U machine. Nintendo Japan’s development houses are struggling with High Definition code. If you look at the existing and future of 1st party games; they are not genuinely in 3D HD… DK Tropical Freeze, NSMBWU, NSLWU, Zelda Wind Waker, and Super Mario 3D Word… They’re testing grounds games for the developers to get used to making HD games. The Wii U is a complete year behind itself which now has sever repercussions for Nintendo…. This time LAST YEAR we should have been playing Super Mario 3D Word… With PS4 and XBox One right around the corner there is now no hope. Of course, this in IMO.

At the Launceston store in Tassie they had five premium packs and four basic packs still there at around lunch time today. Add to that a truckload of pro controllers, wii remote pluses, and other accessories like screen protectors. Games there included Disney Infinite ($44), Skylanders Giants ($19), Fifa 13 ($35 I think), ZombiU, Nintendo Land for $30 and Assassin’s Creed 3. Was shocked to find so much, but by the time I left with another Premium Pack, white pro controller and Disney Infinite (already have the other games), there were more people there looking at the discount bucket. Thanks Vooks!!! Can’t believe I scored some goodies after the pitiful last Dick Smith game sale fiasco.

Sad? Yes? But who’s fault is this really? Nintendo made 4 fundamental mistakes with the Wii U.

    1. The Name – “Wii U” doesn’t differentiate itself enough from the Wii. The general consumer (who are not fans or hardcore gamers) think the Wii U is just a Wii with a new controller.

    2. Timing – The Wii U was rushed out to get the jump on the “next gen” consoles with problems such as the well known firmware issues

    3. Technology – Essentially the Wii U is a “last gen” console. It has only just caught up to HD. Now everyone else is moving to x86 CPU’s while Wii U still uses PowerPC. This is for BC i’m sure, but developers end up dropping support as everyone else is on a different platform. Poor sale’s won’t help change the issue either.

    4. Price – Need I explain further? The console is now 50% at Dick Smith and I picked one up at 4:30pm on the day of the sale. You would think it would have been gobbled up in a few minutes similar to the last Dick Smith firesales (3DS $85, DSiXL $40, PS3/360 $100, etc). Yet late afternoon and the 5 Dick Smith’s I live around still have stock. If at 50% off and won’t sell, every retailer in the country will be struggling to move stock.

Yes I still support Nintendo and it would be devastating if they went the way of Sega, but the Wii U is looking ominous…

Unfortunately there were no Wii Us at my Dick Smith, the table was pretty sparse when I got there. But I did manage to pick up Skylanders Giants, NSMB 3D land 2, an AirGlow Wii mote, a Wii U screen protector and some Skylanders accessories.

Thanks for the heads up on the sale Vooks, wouldn’t have stopped by Dick Smith without it :-).

I was also able to pick up a premium Wii U console 🙂 When I left the store there was also a standard Wii u console still on display 😀

A lot of pro wii u consoles on ebay today… unfortunately even 50% off isn’t cheap enough considering I really only want to play wind waker hd (not going to pay 300 just for one game).

@ spraulin I completely agree with you. As both a Nintendo and SEGA fan – I’d hate to see them go the same way as the latter; but it’s seriously going that way.

I wound’t be surprised in the slightest if Nintendo HQ are having serious discussions about cutting their losses with Wii U (like SEGA did with Saturn) and making a new home console sooner than scheduled……

Given the regularity of games and console clearances at Dick Smith I would say that this has as much to do with their poor performance as Nintendo’s.

Well I checked the DSE I could find in Melbourne CBD, two of them don’t exist any more and another two looked like they never even had anything WiiU related. They looked fairly barren on the rest of the console side as well which is saying something about the stores support for the medium.
